1932

Assassination attempt on Hitler at the Berlin Hotel Kaiserhof. Hitler’s food is poisoned.

1940

Rationing begins in the U.K.

1941

Dutch Jews are forbidden to enter movie theaters.

1942

The history of Eighth Air Force begins on January 2, 1942 with its activation at Savannah Air Base in Savannah, Georgia. 73 miles Northwest of Patras, Greece, British submarine HMS Proteus torpedoes Italian troopship Citta Di Palermo. Palermo sinks in 6 minutes, killing almost everyone on board. B-25s take off from Hornet in a test for the preparation of the bombing of Japan. Japanese troops land on Singapore Island.

1944

8th Air Force attacks Kiel, Germany.

1945

Fierce air battles over western front, with 188 out of 800 Luftwaffe planes reported being shot down during their last major attack of the war. 8th Air Force attacks Cologne, Germany. Auschwitz concentration camp is liberated.
