1929

Wall Street stock market crashes.

1939

First meeting of the Uranium Committee, headed by Lyman Briggs of the National Bureau of Standards. $6,000 is budgeted for neutron experiments.

1940

First flight of the North American P-51 occurs. Italy invades Greece. Battle of Britain gradually comes to an end.

1942

Battle of El Alamein begins.

1944

Allies capture Achen, the first city to be taken in Germany. Soviet troops enter East Prussia. U.S. Navy defeats Japanese in Battle of Leyte Gulf. British troops capture Tilburg, Holland. Anne and Margot Frank are transported to Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp. 8th Air Force attacks Hamm, Germany.
