This Week in WWII – 1st Week of December

1941

Pearl Harbor: Japan attacks U.S. First Canadian troops arrive in Britain. Germany abandons its attack on Moscow and the USSR counter attacks. Japanese forces leave Palau for the Philippines. U.S. declares war on Germany and Allies (not USSR) declare war on Japan.

1942

The first nuclear reactor goes critical at the University of Chicago under the leadership and design of Enrico Fermi.

1943

A Japanese torpedo in the Marshall Islands damages U.S. carrier Lexington, a.k.a. ‘the Blue Ghost.” Its aircraft destroyed 30 enemy aircraft, however, the Lexington would go on to survive the war.

1944

One of the first tank battles takes place in North Africa, with the British 4th Armored Division pushing back Italian forces.

1945

The Battle of the Bulge ends.
