1941

Erwin Rommel appointed commander of the Africa Corps.

1942

B-25s take off from Hornet in a test for the bombing of Japan. Japanese troops land on Singapore Island.

1943

Germany surrenders at Stalingrad (8/23/1942 – 2/2/1943) after five months and ten days – two million lives were lost. Battle of Guadacanal ends.

1944

Malta Conference Ends. 8th Air Force attacks St. Avold, France.

1945

8th Air Force attacks Mannheim, Germany. 8th Air Force participates in a massive B-17 raid against Berlin, Germany. Crimea-Yalta Conference begins. Evacuation from Stalag Luft IV at Gross Tychow, Pomerania began an eighty-six day forced march to Stalag XI-B and Stalag 357 at Fallingbostel. Many prisoners were then marched from here at the end of the war towards Lübeck.

1946

Gen. Carl A. Spaatz is designated Commanding General, Army Air Forces, succeeding Gen. Henry H. Arnold.

1957

Paulus dies in Baden 14 years after he surrenders in Stalingrad.
