This Week in WWII: 1st Week of September
1939
Great Britain, France, New Zealand, Canada, and Australia declare war on Germany. Prime Minister Chamberlain was reluctant but capitulated to the necessity for the war declaration.
U.S.A. proclaims neutrality in the war in Europe.
1943
British troops land on mainland Italy, beginning the Allied campaign in Italy.
U.S. troops land six days later and the new Italian government surrenders.
1944
On September 1, 1944, Paul Tibbetts is assigned to command the project at Wendover Army Air Field, Utah that became the 509th CG, in connection with the Manhattan Project.
The Frank Group is sent to Auschwitz. There the men are separated from the women.
1945
WWII ends after six years of fighting. USS Missouri hosts the official signing of surrender by the Japanese.
