1939

Assassination attempt on Hitler-General Kurt von Hammerstein-Equord in1939. Canada declares War on Germany. General Gamelin orders a halt to the French advance into Germany.

1940

Long the isolationist with the view that Germany should negotiate with Hitler, Kennedy is quoted in the Boston Globe as, “Democracy is finished in England. It may be here.” Italy invades Egypt.

1941

Bulgaria makes peace with the USSR and declares war on Germany.

1943

Nazi troops occupy Rome. Mussolini declares himself head of fascist government.

1944

Germany launches first V-2 rocket on Britain. Allies enter Germany. Quebec Conference begins.
