1936

First thirteen B-17s are ordered.

1937

FDR is inaugurated as U.S. President.

1941

FDR sends Churchill a letter in which he quotes Longfellow from “Ship of State,” indicating that he supports Churchill in the war effort.

1943

Battle for Tarawa ends.

1944

Eisenhower is appointed Supreme Commander, Allied Expeditionary Forces. The Pz VI Tiger 1 is used for the first time by the Germans in Tunisia.

1945

Evacuation from Stalag Luft 7 at Bankau, near Kreuzberg, Poland, begins in blizzard conditions – 1,500 prisoners were forced to march and then loaded onto cattle trucks and taken to Stalag III-A at Luckenwalde, south of Berlin. Stalag XX-A at Thorn, Poland starts evacuation. Stalag 344 at Lamsdorf, Silesia is evacuated.
